Agricola Felline

Agricola Felline

Felline has a long history, the protagonist of the success of Primitivo di Manduria and a milestone in the Accademia dei Racemi project which has given impetus to the rebirth of numerous native vines.
The name derives from a vast archaeological area in Manduria , a short distance from its famous beaches, where there are the remains of an ancient city, called Felline. The archaeological sites are connected to a legend that still keeps alive religious rites in honor of St. Peter. It is said that St. Peter, who left Antioch in 45 AD for Rome, engaged in the mission of spreading Christianity, was shipwrecked arriving right on one of the beaches near Manduria. The people of Felline gave him first aid and assistance, welcomed him into the village, even in the presence of an ongoing plague epidemic. St. Peter freed the people and their king Fellone from leprosy by practicing miraculous healings that led the entire community to convert to the new religion. From Felline he then went to Rome where he founded the Catholic Church becoming the first Pope in history.
